Background: Ureteral stents are crucial for maintaining ureteral patency. Innovations like the magnetic-end double-J ureteral stent (MEDJUS) facilitate outpatient removal using a magnetic device. This systematic review analyzes the role, efficacy, and outcomes of MEDJUS.
Materials and Methods: After PROSPERO registration (CRD42021235739), an electronic search was conducted on December 31, 2020, across databases including PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science using terms like “magnetic,” “ureteric,” “stent,” “double-J,” “urotech,” and “Black-Star.”
Results: Nine studies involving 685 patients were reviewed. MEDJUS was used in 498 procedures (73%) compared to 187 (27%) traditional double-J stents. MEDJUS extraction failure occurred in 8 cases (1.61%). MEDJUS demonstrated cost benefits in all 5 studies reviewed. Better pain scores during stent placement and removal were observed in most studies.
Conclusions: MEDJUS is a viable alternative to traditional double-J stents, offering cost savings and reduced pain, with similar complication rates. It allows for easier, outpatient stent removal, enhancing its use in modern urology.
