A/Prof. Perera has a special interest in Urologic Oncology and completed two years of additional specialised training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York, USA – an endeavour funded in-part through a Fulbright Scholarship.

A/Prof. Perera completed his primary medical degree (MBBS, BMedSci) through The University of Melbourne and Urological training in Queensland, Australia through RACS and the Urologic Society of Australia and New Zealand (USANZ). Given his interest in Urologic Oncology and minimally invasive surgery, A/Prof. Perera completed further Fellowship training in Uro-oncology and Robotic Surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), New York, USA. MSKCC is among the top hospitals and cancer centres in the world and in 2023 ranked as the Best hospital for Urologic Disease in USA. During this tenure, A/Prof. Perera performed hundreds of robotic procedures alongside world-leading surgeons.

Research

During surgical training, A/Prof. Perera actively participated in clinical research and completed a PhD (Urology) through the University of Melbourne. A/Prof. Perera has published extensively with over 160 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals and frequently presents at international congresses. Of these publications are several first-author papers in European Urology, Nature Urology and JAMA Oncology. Among these publications, several have been featured in the major authoritative guidelines, including the European Urologic Association (EUA) and the American Urologic Association (AUA) guidelines for the treatment of prostate cancer. Similarly, other publications completed by A/Prof. Perera have been used as primary data sources by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommendations for the management of Benign Prostatic hyperplasia.During his tenure at MSKCC, the leading cancer research centre globally, A/Prof. Perera was awarded the clinical research award for most outstanding contribution of medical research. In addition to over $200,000AUD in research grants, A/Prof. Perera was also awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 2021, Daniel Christidis Scholarship (for contribution to urological research, USANZ, 2020), the Frank Gardiner Medal (for Best Presentation at Qld USANZ, 2018), the Villis Marshall Prize (for Best Scientific Paper by a Trainee at USANZ, 2017), the RC Bennet Medal (for Best Scientific Paper at Vic RACS, 2017), and Best Presentation (Vic USANZ, 2017).

Beyond medicine

A/Prof. Perera grew up in Gippsland, Victoria where his mother worked as a General Practitioner at their family-owned practice. After completing earlier school years in Gippsland, he moved to Melbourne to finish secondary school and commence university. He completed his surgical training in Queensland, including work in regional centres, such as Toowoomba, Townsville, and Mackay.A/Prof. Perera has many hobbies and interests including long distance running, photography, and cooking. During his time in New York, A/Prof. Perera completed multiple marathons (NYC Marathon 2022, Brooklyn Marathon 2022) and continues to actively participate in running events.
